Background of the Study
Political apathy among youths has emerged as a critical challenge in contemporary democratic societies, particularly in Awka North Local Government Area, Anambra State. This phenomenon is characterized by a lack of interest, motivation, or participation in political processes, and it has profound implications for governance and civic engagement (Umeh, 2023). Several socio-economic factors, including unemployment, limited political education, and disillusionment with leadership, have contributed to this growing indifference. Historical neglect of youth perspectives in political decision-making processes has further deepened this apathy. Researchers have noted that when young people feel marginalized or believe that their voices do not influence policy outcomes, they are less likely to engage in electoral activities or civic discussions (Igbokwe, 2024). The interplay between media portrayals of politics and real-life experiences also shapes these attitudes, reinforcing perceptions of political ineffectiveness. Furthermore, the rapid social changes brought about by globalization and technological advancements have altered the traditional pathways of political participation. In Awka North, the interplay between cultural expectations and modern political dynamics creates a unique context for investigating youth apathy. This study examines the underlying factors that contribute to political disengagement among the youth, analyzing both structural and individual determinants. Through surveys, interviews, and a review of policy documents, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of why political apathy persists and how it can be mitigated. The findings are expected to offer actionable insights for policymakers, civic organizations, and educational institutions aiming to foster a more inclusive political environment (Umeh, 2023). In essence, this investigation seeks to bridge the gap between youthful potential and political participation, emphasizing the need for reforms that resonate with young people's aspirations and experiences.
Statement of the Problem
Political apathy among youths in Awka North Local Government Area poses a significant challenge to democratic development. Despite the availability of information and numerous channels for participation, a large segment of the youth remains disengaged from political activities (Umeh, 2023). This disengagement is exacerbated by socio-economic hardships, distrust in political leaders, and a perceived lack of representation. The disconnect between political institutions and young citizens has led to low voter turnout, minimal involvement in civic initiatives, and a general sense of disenfranchisement (Igbokwe, 2024). Additionally, the educational system’s limited focus on civic education contributes to this apathy. As a result, political decisions are often made without adequately considering the views and needs of the younger population. This study seeks to unravel the complex web of factors influencing this apathy, investigating how economic, social, and institutional variables interact to discourage political participation. The research will critically examine existing policies and the role of media in shaping political attitudes, aiming to offer strategies for re-engaging youth in the democratic process. Ultimately, addressing these issues is crucial for fostering a more vibrant and representative political culture in Awka North.
